WordPress Plugin Readme Copywriting

Your plugin might be free, but your plugin page on WP.org has huge potential.

A well-structured, well-written readme can:

  • Help your plugin rank in Google and WordPress.org search.
  • Drive up installs (which lead to ratings, feedback, and feature requests).
  • Act as a stepping stone to your Pro version or upsells.
  • Get picked up by language models like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.

The problem? Most readmes don’t do any of this. They’re rushed, outdated, or copied from elsewhere. They don’t tell users why your plugin is worth installing, and they definitely don’t sell the upgrade.

That’s where I come in. I write, structure, and format plugin readmes that are built to perform. Based on real research, written in plain English, and ready to upload with no extra work from you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you work from an existing readme and just improve it?

Yes. I’ll assess what’s already there and either improve it directly or rewrite key sections from scratch.

Can you write the short description for WordPress.org too?

Absolutely. I’ll provide this along with the full file, it’s an important ranking signal.

Do you need plugin access to do this?

Yes. It’s important that I have the latest version of the plugin so I can get to know it properly. This is also needed for screenshots. Because it’s a free plugin though, this is straightforward.

Do you also take care of the plugin banner and icon?

This isn’t something I typically do myself, however, I can give design direction. This is what I did for Orderable’s readme. The designer then took my suggestions and created the images.
